Marans chickens originated in the village of Marans, France, which is a port town on the Bay of Biscay. Through the centuries, trade ships brought with them new breeds of chickens which were then bred with the local poultry, resulting in the varieties of Marans chickens we have today.

Fun Fact:  The spelling of the French town of Marans is where the Marans breed of chicken originated and gets it name. So, whether singular or plural, it always ends with an “s.”

The Black Copper Marans is considered a very rare breed but has gained major popularity in the U.S. on both farms and in backyards due to its gentle temperament and ability to lay beautiful, dark brown eggs. The Black Copper Marans is broad-bodied, stands tall, and has black and copper feathers. It is an active feather-legged breed that is excellent at foraging.

While all Marans are known for their dark brown eggs, the Black Copper Marans’ eggs tend more toward being chocolate in color, making them especially popular.
