Why do we begin selling chickens at 2 months old?
At 2 months old, pullets can go to their new home without the need for heat lamps or brooders but are still at a young enough age to bond easily with their new owners. They have most of their adult feathers in, though they still have a fair amount of growing to do; they are just shy of being half grown at this point, having to gain a bit more height and a lot more breadth. By 2 months old, we are almost always able to tell which birds are pullets (young hens) and which ones are roosters, so customers can know they are getting what they paid for. Chickens typically begin laying around 4.5 – 7 months of age and oftentimes will quit laying for awhile due to the stress that moving causes them. By getting them at this younger age, it allows the birds to be be relocated to their new environment without their laying cycle being interrupted in this way. And because the poultry have time to adjust to their new home before they ever start laying, their egg production is maximized. As mentioned, it is easier to bond with your new chickens at this point. They are younger, making them easier to handle, and they are still impressionable, making the bonding process quicker and easier than if you were getting a hen that is already producing eggs.
*** IMPORTANT: When picking up your new chickens from us, please be sure to bring a box/crate/etc. in which to transport your birds to their new home.
